Product Description

Copper roves are a slightly conical disc with a central hole that provides an interference fit on a square copper boat nail, causing the rove to grip in one direction. To use a copper rove, it is driven over the end of the copper boat nail with a rove punch, The tail of the boat nail is cut just above the top of the rove and penned over the rove, forming a rivet. The use of copper roves is preferred over the clenching of boat nails which adds extra holes to a rib, as the end of the nail is turned around and driven back in the rib.

The rove should be slightly under sized so it can be driven tightly onto the nail without falling off.Roves are sized to work with specific nail gauges.It's important  to choose  the correct roves and copper nails.

General Information
Square copper nails are often combined with copper roves to create rivets.  Copper rivets are an important component of traditionally-built boats as they are used to fasten the timber planks together and to internal frames.  The square shaft of the copper nail is forced through the under-sized round hole of the rove, allowing the rove to grip the nail.  The end of the copper nail is then shipped off to length and the excess copper is squashed (or peened) over the rove to create a lasting rivet that will be impervious to sea water and last for many years.
